There have been several good threads recently about the pent-up demand for a better 3 rail track system for those who want more 'realism' in the direction of a lower profile and scale ties with proper spacing.

The two candidates are Atlas and ScaleTrax. Both have issues and attributes.

To achieve a more mainline prototypical tie spacing ScaleTrax would have to be entirely re-tooled (probably not going to happen)

Atlas on the other hand might be able to replace their vastly oversized rails for a smaller, lower profile set (from their 2 rail track?) with the center rail smaller still using the existing tie system. Picture MTH's rails on Atlas ties.

ScaleTrax uses an inverted 'T' for their center rail which is quite successful (with NO excessive roller wear). Imagine if Atlas did the same. NOW we would truly have a great looking 3 rail system.

Yes, we still have the third rail 'ruining' the scale appearance but like many of you, I've come be in denial about the third rail - sometimes 2 rail track looks odd to me!

Actually, when photographing our models, we often shoot from a low enough level which can easily hide the center rail. Rich Battista posted some photos of his layout awhile back where he photoshopped out the middle rail and the resulting images were amazing - very realistic!

A couple of fellas here on the Forum are working on using Atlas 2 rail track with a smaller center rail mounted which shows great promise. Hopefully they will share their progress with us soon.

Someone joked about MTH missing being "The King of the 3 Rail track systems". So did Atlas. But this could always change...

Here are some shots taken at track level that hides the 'offending rail' easily. Also notice how the low profile of the rail here (ScaleTrax) gives the locomotives a more massive appearance which is the illusion we are after is it not?

Might be worth suggesting this to Atlas? Sounds like a pretty good idea, whether they would be receptive to it or not is anyone's guess. This might be a great idea for the more scale oriented folks. Maybe they could stay in 3 rail and not have to switch to 2 rail? Atlas would have to decide if there is a market for it, as it would probably still be a change to their manufacturing process. Only they could say for sure how much of a change would be needed. Doesn't sound like much though?

Only thing I would like to see, if they do this, is to make it a new track system in addition to their existing 21st century system.  Maybe a spin off of their 2 rail track or something.  I know the scale folks won't like this, but I actually really like the current 21st century track they have now and would like to see them continue making it. At least until I can afford to purchase all I will ever need

Edit: As a side note, I have emailed Atlas a couple times with questions and they were very responsive, got a reply either same day or next day at the latest.

Sam,

I think your best bet is for MTH to really upgrade their switches and track. I don't think Atlas will reduce the size of their rail.

I could also see scaletrax becoming a non issue if they don't upgrade it, as it is now I would not use it and I don't recommend it to anyone.

It seems right now Ross and Gargraves are the best for now for realistic track components. Also don't expect Ross to either issue or redesign their track system including their ties.
