My son picked up an incomplete set of the Lionel R27 green subway cars several months ago.  There were only 2 cars, the power and a dummy.  The shop he bought them at had no idea why the other 2 cars were missing.  I think he only paid about $200 for the cars.

A few weeks ago, he was hanging around in Connecticut and stopped in a train shop that was shutting down.  He was able to pick up a non-powered add-on set of the red R30 cars for half the list price so only paid $200.

My question is did the New York MTA ever run these cars in mixed sets of the green R27s and red R30s?  Not that it really matters to us since we are going to run them together anyway (kind of Christmassy) but we just wanted to know if this might have been done on the real subways.

The shop that was closing down was interesting as they were selling everything at 50% off list.  He picked up a ton of "N" gauge for himself.  For me, he picked up a Lionel 11333 Santa Fe 4-8-4 Northern, a Lionel 38053 NYC 4-8-2 Mohawk, and 2 Broadway Limited operating water towers (1 NYC and 1 Pennsy).  All in all, a good haul by just happening to walk in to a store that was closing.

Thanks for any help.
