After about ten years of sitting on the shelve I decided to run my first set from 1951.(1467). After a few minutes of oiling and greasing the engine and cars I started her up. She started up immediately and ran as smoothly as the first time I ran her. What a flood of memories as I watched her go around the layout. Reminded me of why I love trains so much. Just wish Dad was here.

you got me thinking. I think I'll run my first set around the tree at Christmas this year. Got it in 1948 and last ran it in the 60's. Thanks Don
It's quite amazing how well-built the trains were that they can sit for years, take a lube job, and run right away. What a wonderful toy!
My dad left my grandpa's Lionel set in a plastic bin in our basement for about 10 years once I got my own set. Back in 2007 my grandpa told me to get it out again and it ran great for having sat that long and probably never had a lubrication. I of course cleaned the 2055 steamer up and gave it a good lubrication and it ran great that year. The 2037 however was in pieces and missing parts. It took me a few months, but I managed to get the parts together and got that one running great too. My grandpa definitely enjoys seeing them running when he's over here I think my dad does too since technically he had them as a kid too.
Ahhh... The true beauty of Postwar: A little lube, put 'er on the track, apply power and let 'er run!
And ozone!!!
Rusty
And that great smelling Marx smoke!
I love the smell of ozone in the morning.
