Sorry, but I need to rant/vent about this caboose. I was so looking forward to it and thrilled when it showed up yesterday. I was impressed at the care Lionel packaged it with, foam and wrapping and protective panels in all sorts of places. First thing I did was oil the wheels and rollers. Noticed right away that one of the axles was rubbing on one of the break shoes. only one axle rolls freely, the others have a ton of drag, so it does not glide down the rails. Now I read the manual to learn how to add smoke fluid. I'm suppose to remove the stake support wires, then pull the stack out of the roof. Sure, I don't have the needle dispenser it recommends, but I'm fine using what I have until I can find one online. I just wanted to add a little to see how it smokes. Well, it took me nearly an hour! First the wires wouldn't come out without using pliers. Then I couldn't get the stack out at all, and being plastic, I wasn't going to use the pliers. Upon closer inspection I figured out why it wouldn't come out and why I had issues with the wires, they had been glued in place!! Good thing I noticed before I broke it. The pipe cover does rotate, so I tipped it out of the way and added fluid. I had to rebend the tips of the wires to get them back into the sides of the stack. Now all the paint is about flaked and scratched off of the tips of the wires. Sigh. At least it now ready to put on the track and power up. I couple it to the end of my train and turn on my transformer. I notice right away that the light are dim and yellow. Being LED, I was expecting nice bright lights like the cab of my BB. I look inside and it's standard incandescent bulbs!! What is up with that, the catalog said it was a new feature being LED lights!! Now I'll have to convert it to LEDs when I start the process on my passenger cars. Two strikes against this caboose. I basically lost the features I bought it for, the smoke (Can't add any more without damaging it more.) and LED lights (I got RTR cabooses that light up brighter during conventional running then this does in command!).
Now for the finial slap in the face, as soon as the train gets going, the caboose comes off of the train. I nearly loose it. I go over and look, but the couplers are still closed! How in the world did it come apart. So I open one and recoupler them and try going again. Once again the caboose comes off without the couplers opening. I crouch down and look. The couplers on the caboose are too low!!!
The slightest bump in the track, or in this case due to the extreme drag of the wheel sets, the caboose slips out of the next car's coupler and stops. I just paid a lot of money for something I can't use!
Now I know that features can change between the catalog and actual release, so the desired LED lights missing could be explained that way, but to not let us know that is the case is bad form. But that the smoke stack was glued in is unacceptable when the manual says to pull it out. And with the droopy couplers, how can I even use it short of tying it to the next car and making them a permanent set? Should I write Lionel and see if they'll address it, and have to spend even more money to ship it back to them? Is there a way to bring the couplers back level? It's a nice looking caboose, but it's not what I was expecting or promised in the catalog.
