See my layout is prototypical.
Taken today at the Riverdale (Ogden) Utah yard. Looks like the train was crossing a switch when it derailed. Yes both were loaded with new cars.

Dear John,
We regret to inform you that your ubermeister 5000XL that was ordered in 2011 for the prepaid sum of $100,000.00 has suffered a unfortunate mishap at the hands of an unnamed rail shipping company that paints their equipment gray and yellow. Due to the fact the container your long awaited 500XL was riding in, is now upside down, we are sorry to tell you that we will have to postpone delivery until sometime in 2015. Please be assured we will make every attempt to find a carrier that can keep the d@^*$d container on the tracks. Should you wish to view your 5000XL in its many parts, it will be at Ajax sCrap Auctions soon. Opening bid is $100.00.
Please accept our insincere condolences.

I wonder how many people who's new cars are on those carriers will be made aware by their dealer that "we had a little problem during transport."
The evil competing magazine in this field has an article on a train layout in which it is
described that a section of track passes over a basement commode, and that in a
backing move, a train derailed a caboose over the commode...."Splash!".
I doubt the dealers even know.
