I was there at least 25 years ago. Our first daughter was not born yet, I was aware Thurmond was being taken care of by someone, but did not see it with this paint job. Excellent Photo Peter!! Thank you!
I love places like that. I do not like the hustle and bustle of small town America, and love the mountains. Old railroad places just add to the joy.
I'm sure it has it's problems, but it certainly is easy to fall in love with WV.
Good stuff, Peter.
I am not certain, but I think I remember seeing some pictures of this in a magazine from the last year or so? Sure looks familiar. I think it could have been Trains magazine?
Isn't Thurmond on the CSX (ex C&O) mainline in WV? Beautiful photos.

When I would catch the Amtrak Cardinal in Cincy to Wash DC it would stop in Thurmond.
Thurmond, WV...I have run the 765 through there many, many times.
The bridge shown in in the fourth image in the OP's post is the Loup Creek Branch. Many of 765's scenes in the movie Matewan were filmed there.
This is the former C&O main line.
That station / depot would be great in O gauge.

David.....it certainly would!

Hi Peter, Yes: I posted this photo just yesterday, on a thread called, "Your thoughts about the 2015 Lionel Signature Catalog."
I am glad you found the location, well done.......
As a railroad nut, history nut, and ghost town nut, I find Thurmond to be a magnet
and have been there several times...once to raft the New River, right past the town.
(if I remember right, the rafters put in the river just above Thurmond and took out
at Hawk's Nest bridge)
The station has now been restored, I think by the National Park Service, but I liked it best before then, when the town really had that ghost town feeling.
Love the real pictures in the new Lionel catalog. This one is a classic for sure.
