My red wheel will not work. I can move the Legacy engine by hitting the speed control.... I've changed batteries ... hit the reset button and exercised the brake button. I swear CAB-1 appears on the screen at the first... but all my engines say Legacy when I scroll through the settings. Is there a way that I made my Legacy a Cab-1 by mistake?

You can not change the stripes on your Zebras. The engines are what they are, and have to be spoken to in the language they understand.
Address by the handheld the engine in question, press the (Info) button on the handheld, change the type on the first screen to the type of control system for that engine.
The red control knob should then talk to the engine.
That's the kicker Paul ... when I do that the engine says it's loaded as Legacy. Cab 1 only appears at the beginning when I first turn the remote on and then goes away.. confusing I know.

On the back of the handheld is a small round hole, with the handheld on, push it with a small paper clip or pin.
Is this a new Legacy 990, or an older model?
I did reset it and it didn't do anything. This is third one I've received from Lionel because my other two had issues... Version 1.51

If you are receiving replacement Legacy systems from Lionel, they should have version 1.52 on them as a operating system.
My CAB-2 powers up in CAB-1 mode when I apply track power via my PowerMasters. I think that's normal.
Then, as I address each engine my CAB-2 will bring up that locomotive in it's appropriate command mode that I programmed, in my case, LEGACY for the LEGACIES and TMCC for my Atlases (TMCC).
Every once in awhile I'll get an error message on my CAB-2 as I go back-and-forth between my LEGACY and TMCC engines, i.e. the controller will stay in LEGACY mode momentarily as I switch from a LEGACY locomotive to a TMCC and vice versa. It quickly corrects itself though.
Ok thanks for the nugget catnap..I thought it did wasn't sure. I made a small test loop just to test it in another scenario but it didn't work there either. I also bit the bullet and wiped out the data but (sigh) that didn't work either. Sounds like I will be making a call to Lionel on Monday.

Just received my controller back from Lionel... The tech told me he couldn't get the red wheel not to work! But he told me that he has seen this problem before so they shipped me another one. Fired it up last night and all is well!
Since this thread started, I have purchased a 993 expansion system. The red wheel did not respond correctly. Sent it to Lionel repair, received a replacement yesterday. All is well with the new Cab-2. Repair sheet said that the sensors for the wheel motion were not operating correctly.
Wheel sensor replaced was the repair for mine too. Has been working fine since it came back.
Maybe that was the problem component originally?
