As a first step, I'd suggest checking that the sound switch in the cab is turned on. If that's not the problem, then it's possibly a loose connector or connection to the loudspeaker. Unfortunately that will involve having to dismantle the locomotive to check.
Yes, play with the sound switch, but . . . The sound switch controls only the sounds the loco makes when it is moving. At least on the three I have. it cannot adjust or turn off the idle chuffing sound. I was surprised when I first discovered that, but someone here pointed out that it is a feature so that if the loco in in neutral but on a track where the power has been left on, you'll know.
So, does it make sounds at all, when idling? If not, then its something besides the switch. A shame for the young girl though, but hopefully it runs well otherwise. I'd also test if it makes bell, whistle, and "all aboard" sounds by using those buttons, if not, then either the speaker of the whole sound car is shot. There is some chance that its just a conector so you could pull the body and check, but . . .

That is correct. The sounds continue to play when the locomotive is idling. It's not a high volume sound, but it would be nice if it could be turned off completely.
If the engine is emitting no sounds at all, it's likely not something that the cab switch will correct.
thanks. will let you know what i find tomorrow.
