I have just acquired some very nice post war pieces that have the residue of duct tape on areas.  Some is plastic and some is painted metal.  They are so nice.  What solvents would you recommend.  The man that owned the collection kept items together using duct tape.

I appreciate any advice to help.

Thanks

I used to use Dupont Prep Sol but its gotten so expensive I now use Klean Strip Prep All. Its used to clean wax and grease from surfaces before painting and will not harm paint that has cured but leave it wax and grease free. Available in most hardware and home stores. Wipe on wipe wipe off it leaves no residue. You will find many more uses for it including adhesive remover.

So you got them from Red Green, eh?

Naptha (lighter fluid) or mineral spirits (paint thinner) are fairly common solvents that you might already have in the house or garage.  Put some on a rag, then dampen the dried residue and let it sit for few minutes to soak and soften, then try and wipe off.  Repeat if necessary.  Note: I have never had either one yet harm any plastic or well-dried paint yet, but never say never.  You may want to test an inconspicuous spot first.

Baked-on, well-dried duct tape residue can be a real booger to get off.  If the naptha or mineral spirits don't work, You may have to bite the bullet and go purchase one of the other products that have been recommended.
