I planned a portion of my layout around Lionels magnetic gantry crane and clamping bucket crane. The bucket was to load and unload a coal barge from coal cars.

These cranes are rubber belt driven and both of the have failed. I can’t seem to find the right size o ring to repair them.  Is there an easy and reliable repair.

Not to be a jerk, but you guys know the forum has a search feature, right?

Also, it also helps to identify, by product number, which gantry cranes you're asking about. Modern Lionel has been producing them for over 30 years, and there have been some differences over time.

Then, Why do you have to act like a "Jerk", just to help some one?

PaperTRW & Arthur P Bloom, IMHO I believe this forum is for fun, to learn, and to have people help other people. Some of you are smarter the others and I as we have a hard time with the search system here. You can spend hours searching for information. But on the other hand you can post a question and have people helping you with in minutes! I see nothing wrong with that. There is a great bunch of people here that love to help others out. Just don't shoot them down cause they ask for help!

Thanks Mike

I really appreciate the support.  And, in response to Arthur and PaperTRW, both of you are correct,  I could actually do all the research, but I saw the thread and thought to myself. Wow these guys probably have all the part numbers and details already ironed out so I will just ask. Being a single dad and sole provider and the one that has to do everything solo around the house, sometimes there is not just a lot of time to do a full on research.    I also know that there are several variations of the gantry crane, but I believe that there is only one with belts.  Again I do not know this to be a fact, but that is what I thought, and  i figured out that some others have already researched this topic in its entirety and already know the answer.  I also had not found anything by searching on the forum before, so maybe I am not doing it correctly.  I do know one thing, If I know the answer to something, I certainly will help any body that asks for help by sharing my knowledge.  As Mike G. says,  "IMHO I believe this forum is for fun, to learn, and to have people help other people". It could not have been put in better words.  Thanks again Mike.

At a train meet today I bought what was described as (and appears to be) a brand new in-the-box Celebration Series 282R Gantry Crane.  Magnet works great, but nothing else does; motors spin but no movement left/right or up/down.  Bummer.

I' trying to track down the fellow from whom I purchased the crane, but in the meantime I'm preparing for the worst.  I've looked through the Lionel service info and although I haven't found the specific exploded diagram for this crane I've found other information that appears similar.  This unit appears to use the 600-2315-300 Motor and Gearbox Assembly to animate the cab and boom.  Can someone tell me if this "assembly" is serviceable, i.e., is there a belt that can be replaced or something that can adjusted therein, or is this just a toss/replace the entire assembly situation?  Also, is there a specific exploded diagram and parts list for this unit (and maybe the Motor and gearbox Assembly too?), and if so where might I find it/them?

As always, thanks in advance for any help.

Well, the good news is that the crane uses two of those motor units which are in a number of incarnations of this accessory, and they are serviceable, and available, if needed. Probably the grease has hardened and the belts are slipping, which will require dis assembly of the gearboxes(not too difficult) to clean out the old and put in the new(Lucas Red 'N' Tacky #2).

Rob is right on. Removing the legs from the crane first seems to work the best for me.  Then there are two screws for each motor assembly to remove the assembly from the center mounting plate.  Once they're removed you have to pop one end of the plastic gear case and then it pivots open on the other end.  Inside is a worm gear that will be all gummed up with nasty grease. Clean that off and possibly replace the belts in there and it should work.

Hey guys, just want to say thanks for the advice.  The grease was indeed hardened, and "nasty" doesn't begin to describe how thick (almost solid) that stuff was.  Nonetheless, a little bit of paint thinner made short work of it, and a little Red 'N Tacky #2 has the crane running like a champ.

One footnote, though...although the motor/gearing setup on this crane is similar to other modern era cranes, the components appear to be slightly smaller on this crane than on its predecessors.  As such, the belts used on the older cranes are too large to fit this particular model.  I'll have to do a bit more research to find the correct exploded diagram for this unit to get the correct part number for those belts.

Again, thanks for your help...much appreciated.

Thanks, John.  I'm seeing just about everything except the drive belt that goes into the motor/drive assembly.  Have I missed something?

Lionel doesnt appear to service internal parts to the motor. Look at this thread which mentions an O ring from Ace Hardware

There is a guy on E bay that sells the motors to these gantry cranes.  I bought two from him.  He also has lots of other parts.  Here is the link.
