Hi everyone . Recently I had the misfortune of having the power supply for my lionel cab1-l burn out. It made for disastrous results to my tmcc nw2. It seems that the actual transformer inside the wall wart burned out. It is an ac to ac 9v transformer. There are several similar transformers available on the internet by jameco ranging from 500 mA to 1500 mA. The only difference is that they do not have a 3 prong plug, meaning they are not grounded. I am wondering if these are suitable to use and I might have to run a separate ground wire from the common on my layout to the house electrical ground. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Why don’t you just order a “Direct” Replacement from Lionel! Seems the simplest thing to do!!

It's no longer available through lionel. Just checked the website parts listings.
Post on the WTB site, someone is sure to have one...
Thanks. I guess when lionel went to bluetooth they stopped carrying replacement parts for their older systems.

I would talk to Deane (Lionel Service Mgr) to find out what is going on there!! They still sell the Legacy 1L Equip. That equipment is not that old! Call LIONEL !!

The power cube has not been available from Lionel for some time. Some folkyhave gotten them from old stock at dealers, but that may have dried up.
So last night I tore apart the power supply. Inside there is a fuse soldered onto the hot wire coming from the transformer. It's hidden under the insulation. And of course the fuse had blown. After connecting the hot wire back together, I had power. I removed the fuse and had to resolder all the connections because they are quite flimsy. That included ALL the wires. My intention is to get an in line fuse holder and splice it into the hot wire outside of the casing and put an 500mA fuse there. That way if the fuse blows again, I have easy access to it.

The Legacy BASE1L/CAB1L is the replacement for the old TMCC base and CAB1, so it makes sense that parts for that one are still available. The BASE1L brick is 9VAC vs 12VAC for the old TMCC base brick.
Would attaching a ground wire from the base RS-232 ground prong in addition to a functioning ground in the power pack add to/ guarantee a good or even better ground than through the wall wart??
It’s not a better ground you want, it’s that you want a good connection to the house ground wire which you are using for an antenna. The wall wart does that. But an additional wire connected to pin #5 of the base DB9 connector may help as additional antenna wire if needed.
You can also do what I did and tie into the outside power jack barrel, that's how the TMCC Buffer gets it's earth ground connection.

I keep forgetting that, and it’s so much the best access to the ground pin connection.
Hi- one clarification about the picture GRJ posted.
It looks like a male/female 2.5 mm ID /5.5 mm OD extension cord so to speak for the Lionel wall wort cab1 cable.
Do I just connect an extra piece of wire (shown) coiled up to the outer barrel connection?
It's exactly what it is, it's a short extension with that extra single wire connected to the outside barrel lead. In the CAB1, CAB1L, and CAB2, the outside of the barrel connection brings the earth ground to the command base, they all have the 2.5/5.5 connector.
Wonderful. After I actually hooked up the extra wire to earth gnd. All was well. Thank you!!
Yep, the earth ground to the command system is kinda' key to proper operation!
