I have a bunch of Weaver PS-2 hoppers I'd like to convert over to 2-rail. They're properly weighted and have the equalized trucks with 3-rail metal wheelsets (old fast-angle style.) I'd like to switch them over to 2-rail metal wheelsets. Any recommendations (part numbers would be appreciated)? Code 172's will also work for me.

Thanks.

Today my preferred Bettendorf style truck is Intermountain plastic with Intermountain or NWSL wheel sets.  I believe they have noticably better prototype appearance than Athearn's - though I have many of cars with those as well.  The IM brake shoes really improve the prototype look, and when properly weathered the simulated springs to my eye look more like the heavy steel springs on the prototype than the light metal springs on Athearn trucks. I also find IM trucks when properly assembled equalize better than most sprung trucks.

Yoder trucks are beautiful and run very well. I have purchased quite a few of them for specific prototypes that are unavailable in plastic (e.g. 70T Crown trucks for PRR quad hoppers).  But for a good looking Bettendorf from a value perspective, in my opinion it's hard to beat Intermountain.

Well, a follow-on. The Intermountain wheelsets arrived this week. Went down to the club today and decided to swap out the wheels and couplers on a few (now formerly) three-rail Weaver cars. Unfortunately, I ran out of screws as I had forgotten the bulk of them at home. The Intermountain wheels were a good fit and the cars roll nicely and track well.

Also had a TTX Bulkhead flat lying around for years that I decided to switch over and put into service.

Leftovers. Will probably end up as flat-car loads and/or spare parts.

Have 9 more sets of wheels and a few more pairs of couplers, so I'll be swapping out a few more cars this weekend.

Some of the guys at the club are shaking their heads; others are encouraging it.
