I have an Atlas O scale RS1. I want to replace the factory installed couplers with Kadees. I have looked at prior posts on this forum for removing Atlas couplers, but they all seem to talk about popping the top coupler plate off the coupler on a car of some type. On the RS1 the coupler mount seems to be an integral unit. Do I have to destroy the mount to remover it? Or am I not seeing things clearly? Any suggestions and comments will be much appreciated.

Not familiar with the RS mount but I replaced a coupler on my SW switcher. It took more force than I would have liked but the plate in question does pop or rather fly off.
From the Atlas O website, parts diagram section:
I generally replace the Atlas coupler box with a Kadee box (typically an 805) by forcing two 1-72 screws slightly diagonally into the existing Atlas screw holes. You will likely need a shim between the box and pilot. I use the Micro Mark shims.
Another option is to just use Atlas' newer couplers which are a Kadee copy. I use them with Kadee centering springs as I find the Atlas springs too strong.
Why Atlas didn't make the screw holes compatible with the Kadee boxes is beyond me.
