Replacing decorative horn on early Lionel F’s & Alcos

Lionel made the decorative horns on top of their earlier F Units & Alco diesels with metal tabs that are just about impossible to bend. I got the old one out using needle nose pliers, but trying to bend the tabs into place on the replacement (NOS) is very difficult—trying not to crack the body. Does anyone have any tips on this? Thanks.
