While I was finding out which smoke unit the engine has, I discovered that it is wired directly to a circuit board at the same spots the headlight is connected. 

The engine has had ERR TMCC installed, and, ever since, the headlight has worked intermittently.  I am now wondering if part of the problem has been that the smoke unit has not been getting power all the time.

Is there a way to find out why the power has not been constant on the headlight/smoke unit?

I sent my Williams ATSF scale Hudson to Gunrunnerjohn to have him install a fan driven model. He did a great job. However, maybe too good. You might ask him to set it at a  smoke level you would most desire.

We have just the ticket for you Jeff!   Is this the level of smoke you are looking for?

Two things to consider.

1. Turning the smoke on, after a brief one or two second period, the power goes to half wave. That's half of what the smoke unit used to see.

2. The Seuthe smoke unit driver transistor/regulator has a heat sink mounted on it. I have seen the heat sinks come loose. That would shut the smoke unit down when the transistor/regulator overheats.
