Engines on the tracks. Power on. TIU on. WIU on and connected to MTHDCSWIFI.  Both are connected to 1. my iPhone and 2. my iPad.  While trying to add a new engine to ipad it will go to "reading" "interrogating" and then to REQUEST TIMED OUT.  Try it again and I'll get NO WIU / TIU FOUND, but they are all there.

I did do a WIU reset and was able to add a couple of engines, but the next time it was REQUEST TIMED OUT.  I left for AZ in January and everything was working fine on iphone and ipad, but now after 3 mos. it just ain't the same.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,  Mr. Bill

While you mentioned adding a locomotive, you did not indicate whether other locomotives on either your phone or iPad work.  I am going to guess no based on the messages you are getting.

The fault is, usually, the app.  Try this on either device:

  • delete the app
  • download a new copy of the app but do not install it.
  • Make sure your TIU and Wi-Fi are on.
  • Switch your device to the DCS Wi-Fi.
  • Finish installing the app.

If all went well you should be able to add and run locomotives.  You will need to repeat this for your other device.

Let us know how you make out.

Never had this problem in 6 1/2 yrs if running the WIU.  I tried your idea and no good.

I still get "no connection"  "timed out" or "no WIU / TIU found.  Even when WIU is found, it times out.

Now, I can't even get the iphone APP to work...just says "no connection" even tho I have MTH DCS WIFI showing up.

bah humbug.  Perhaps I will disconnect everything and start over.  What a Bummer!

Good news, very bad news.

Without trying I have managed to duplicate what you are seeing - so it is not you.  Nor is it your TIU or WIU.

If your app has any previously loaded locomotives, you will be able to run them.  You cannot ADD a new MTH locomotive; you will get the “REQUEST TIMED OUT” message.  RECOVER also fails to find anything.  This applies to both PS2 and PS3 locomotives.  Interestingly enough, you can add TMCC and Legacy locomotives and they will function as expected.  Funny that the MTH app won’t work with MTH locomotives but works fine with Lionel.  Yet and vote for keeping your hand-held remote.

I will poke at this tomorrow.  Interested to know if anyone else has run into this situation and if you found the issue or, even better, the fix.  Also, is it unique to iOS.

So, was something done to the APP between last December and now that would affect the iPhone and iPad  from not functioning with the APP?  In December all worked fine on the iPhone and the iPad.  I was out of town for 3 months and the train just sat there.  When I try to run it after 3 months, nothing will work with the APP.

I did get the trains to work a day or so ago from the iPhone and now today I can't.

"connection failed"  "timed out" and all that stuff.  Very hit and miss it seems.

Actually, Alan, I thought that I might be too up to date.  I am running beta 16.5.2.

I do not use the app, preferring my one-handed remote, so I had not checked to see if things were working until I saw this post.  Unfortunately, I was very quickly able to confirm what Zipper69 was seeing.  No matter what, I got the same time out message and could not add an MTH locomotive but could load Lionel locomotives.  Today I dusted off an old iPhone 6 running iOS 10.2.  I connected the WiFi to the WIU, powered up a track and successfully added a locomotive.  I then tried my current iPhone and added a locomotive with no problem.  I went to my iPad and it worked just fine.  Absolutely nothing has changed since last night except that I used the old iPhone first.  I should have retested the current phone first.  It makes zero sense toe me that just using an old version of iOS would somehow fix the problem.

I can't tell the OP much since I fixed the problem without doing anything.

Latest update:

Earlier today I tried my iPhone APP and I could not get connected.

Just now I tried it again.

First I pulled the power from the TIU and WIU as well as the cable from TIU to the WIU.

Since the power to the TIU was coming from the transformer, I did NOT plug the aux power from the brick into the TIU.

Cables re-inserted…WIU comes back on line. Power to tracks back on and I opened the APP on my iPhone and bang…it worked. I had control. I ran an engine and then I thought I would try the iPad to see if it would connect.

I tried to connect while everything was still on and the engine was running.

iPad did not connect “no WIU / TIU Found….

and while this was happening, I lost control of the APP on the iPhone. Engine was running, but tapping any of the options on the iPhone failed. No forward, no bell, nothing.

Back to the drawing board.

Just got done running trains.  I only used the iPhone and everything worked swimmingly!  Will not use iPad for awhile, I guess.

I thought I was on to something but it, somehow, cured itself, so my help is somewhat limited.  I can only suggest deleting the app.  Download it again but don’t open it.  Make sure the WIU and TIU are powered up.  Now open the app.  At so point it should let you know that it found the TIU and be ready.  Power up an engine and see if it can load it.  Don’t know what else to tell you.
