My Grandfather, a machinist for American Greetings for many years, built a brass live steam locomotive, which was handed down to my dad when Grandpa passed.  The unit was damaged when some restoration work was done in Mom's house.  The story behind the locomotive / tender is that it was hand built from scratch in the 50's using brass and steel stock, and took about a decade of part-time work to complete.  Grandpa's full basement was filled with only three things when I was a kid - the machine shop (about 100sq feet of lathe, mill, drill press, the washer and dryer, and his rail layout (probably close to 1000 sq ft).   I am looking for recommendations on where to get it repaired (preferably in the Chicago metro area).  I will work on getting decent pictures of the unit and the damage for your reference.

Came across a live steam locomotive that was built in the early 50's by a machinist.

It was in a state of disrepair and the descendants would not part with it at any price.  It's a shame cause that was about 20 years ago and now it is just a pile of rust.  hope you can get yours back in shape.

Some pics would be nice.

I have four live steamers in various stages.  They will go on eBay when I croak.  One is O Scale, one is 1.6" scale, and two are 1" scale.

When you hire out model restoration, be aware that hourly rates for machinists are upwards of $80 these days.  It takes a very long time to restore model trains, and even longer if you want them to run on steam.
