Well, if you just want to join the conversation, start typing in the "Add reply" box at the bottom. If you want to direct a comment to a specific poster, you can just add the poster's name (for instance, "@Steve Tyler") in front of your reply. If you want to quote the previous post, in whole or part, just hit the little gear thingy (that's a technical term!) at the bottom of that post, and the post will be embedded at the top of your reply -- delete whatever you don't want to repeat.
There will be a test at the end of this lesson . . .
there is no add reply box

Is the post you want to reply to a For Sale or Wanted to Buy post? If so, you cannot reply to posts in those subforums. You have to use the contact info in the poster’s profile or (if provided) in the post itself. The contact info is usually in the form of an e-mail address. All communication for those posts is to be done offline, not on the forum.

If using a smartphone, tap on the icon on the bottom right corner (furthest to the right) of the original post, and on the next screen tap on Reply with Quote. Then, do your reply, and tap on Post Reply on bottom center. Arnold
You have to be signed in to reply. You also do not need to use the gear icon ( reply with quote) to reply, just click inside the reply box. There will be no box for FS and WTB posts.

Sometimes the moderators close a topic for various reasons - replies getting off topic, on the cusp of getting political, replies getting redundant, etc. When that happens, there will be a red box saying "closed" at the top of the topic, and there will be no reply box.

Two options to reply with quote and copy a post link (see pix below)
As others have said, For Sale/ Buy posts do not allow replies.
To tag a member hold the shift key and then type the @ symbol + the member's screen name. The system auto-completes names as you type.
Finally you can just add a comment on a thread.

Any secrets to using the @ on a phone? I find it to be very finicky.

Same here. I usually just surf the forum when on my phone and reply when on my laptop.

Look at the top of the topic, on the right. There's a rectangular blue box labeled "Post". Below that is a grey rectangular box labeled "Add Reply", and below that is a column with links to recent topics on various Forums.
Please edit any time you use the gear to "Reply With Quote". It annoys a lot of readers to see the whole post and all of its photos repeated when you make a reply. Just delete the parts of the text and any photos that are not specifically what you are replying to. That will make your reply interesting enough to get the attention of most readers, who have already seen the photos and don't want to see the entire group of them with your reply.
Also, it does no good to have a thin skin if you reply and innocently post a factual error which is pointed out by another Forumite. This is a large group of people, and some have more forbearance than others. If you hit the hot button of certain posters, they may be blunt in challenging your reply, but, believe me, the OGR is, even at its worst, much kinder than the other train forums.
Best wishes to you for wanting to participate, and may it be a pleasant experience for you.

You replied to this post so obviously the other post you are referring to is either "Closed" or is a "For Sale" or "Wanted to Buy" post as the others have stated. If you want to obtain info related to a closed post just create a new one.
Brad
If you are trying to reply in general and NOT trying to reply to a specific person's comment, the "add reply" is in a box with a blue border at the very bottom of the page bordered by blue. As someone said, you do have to be signed in to reply.

Yea- just like this. Good point Tom. I wish more people would abide by these simple rules.

Oh wait...does that make me one of "those" people......
@RSJB18 thanks to all..... i get this mucked up more often than not.
Luckily, the woman who had the courage to marry me thinks I still be train-able....
Clearly, I am only navigating between one meeting and the next! Remember the plan we had to install a tunnel entrance to the walkincloset? Ya'll were so supportive, sending encouragement, photos and helpful hints. I had a team of G-Raffes (thanks again to M Mitchell) supervising the pre-demolition. But, a higher court stepped in stating I did not have the correct Permits and release documentation to move forward. I pled my case...... but no go.
Even though my grandson made a very compelling Powerpoint presentation, Management tabled the topic ,...... indefinitely. Bummer
So... thanks for your continued support. I even tried the tips on "how to respond to a post".. I hope that his reply is among my finest work work. (dang, forgot to proofread and spell check. I am lucky she thinks that I am still train-able after 50 years!
Salute my dear friends....

That's an important point, if you're going to deal with any on-line forum of similar venue, there will always be the good, bad, and questionable. Ignore the bad, tolerate the questionable, and applaud the good.
