Hate to admit it but my train layout is not like I wanted it.I wanted to run trains so I rushed it together.Big mistake on my part because I have an unwanted grads and a curve thats really sharp.Being that my layout is intended to be a shelf type around the walls.Today a trip to lows I now have 4 2x10x10s.On top of this I will have blue board to take care of track sound. This is gonna be a better brace and I should be able to get rid of the grades.I am also gonna take out the sharp turns.Which will make for a better layout and better train operation.

Don't feel bad man.A good portion of us here have been through it.Just think of how excited you will be when you get the second one up and running.Nick

Hey well this is what i get for rushing things.Your right everyone makes mastakes. Thanks for the kind words.I will try to keep your advice in mind while I am reworking the layout.
Hi seaboard,
Yep, we have all been there in some way or another.
Perhaps this will help your planning. 10' x 10' x 10"w shelf. 072 curves need triangle filler with 18" legs. 054 curves needs a filler with 10" legs in the corner. 042 needs a triangle with 6" legs for a filler. The 072 filler would make the shelf extend out 26.5" from the corner on a 45º at the outside center edge.
The center rail is on 5" center on the 10" board.

enjoy the journey. Sure there will be several versions along the way!!
Be sure to have a plan, and a good one and that, before you drive a nail.
I don't think any layout is ever everything you want. Eventually I think all of us get the itch to improve it some. I'm about to embark on a major revision myself, to a layout I once thought would never need improvement,
If I ever stop changing my layouts, then shoot me, I'm brain dead

Hey I like that you have put an image of the self.I have not thought of a filler but you have.I have decided on o54 curves. And thanks for the helpful hints.
I like to thank all who have replyed to this post.I have said it once before. This is why I like this form good people and helpful people.
Very true, we've all been there. I've repaired low spots, reduced a grade, cleaned up shoddy track joints, and finally this fall at York, I'm replacing my temporary PITA bridge with the new, custom model.
It is a journey, remember that. And best of luck,
George
Actually look at your first attempt as a learning experience that was not wasted. I think everyone who has ever started any hobby has done that. You refine as you go along, correcting your flaws to your satisfaction at that point in time. But never think that your creativity is finite. It isn't. Someday you'll see a layout or hear some discussion about a process or technique with which you'll want to experiment. That is really the fun part. If you think that you've created the ultimate layout for yourself and will be satisfied forever, you are fooling yourself and denying human nature. Wouldn't this hobby become boring if all we did was ran trains along the same track system, passing the same buildings, and never altering or enhancing the landscape? For maximum play value I would suggest small, incremental steps, rather than massive renovations of layouts that you think have to be completed together at one time. The enjoyment is just so much greater when you go slow and easy with a period of time elapsing between the creative urges. To me, building a layout is never something that has an final end result. It's the journey getting there that really counts.
