RR and model RR stuff in Norfolk, VA?

I have been told that the Portsmouth Children's Museum has some great model trains.

What Scott said!  Portsmouth is just across the river by ferry and walking distance from Nauticus (where the USS WISCONSIN is berthed) and to the Children's museum in Portsmouth.  Ask the captain of the ferry which stop where you should get off in Portsmouth, there's one at the end of High Street close to the museum.

I haven't even been to see it up close yet, and I live here!!!  Website says to call to see when they are open.

You'll enjoy the USS WISCONSIN, they open up another section of just about every year.  I worked with a lieutenant that had his retirement ceremony onboard the ship.  But get your bud to take you around on the Destroyer, IMO the sports car of the fleet!

Other than that there's nothing close, except the old Seaboard depot at #1 High Street (right down from the Children's museum and next to the ferry landing) and the depot in Suffolk, about 20 miles away.

I visited Dales trains ..lots to look at all guages...Dale is a good dude. Right next to HUGE antique store lots to look at as well.  Nice way to spend the afternoon.  USS Wisconsin is awesome was closed on the monday i was there but to just stand in its presence was incredible....conrail john

You also have Norfolk Southern's corporate headquarters at 3 commercial place in downtown. It's 1 block up from the tide, and down the street from the Wisconsin. There's a museum on the first floor open to the public - it's not very large but you could spend an hour there.

Also I would recommend you get the harbor tour so you see NS's Pier 6 operation from the water side. It's not open to the public so the water is the only way to see the loading operation. 

Nauticus is a fun visit.

Do you remember a restaurant named "Mason's"? I think that it used to be off Granby St. down on the water. They used to have great Manhattan Style Clam Chowder.

There's also a good hobby shop in Portsmouth that I've gotten a few things from.  Not far from the Elizabeth river though not walking distance.
