When I turn on the above engine, in conventional, I hear the watch dog signal but nothing else. If I hit the direction button or the horn button, then it starts up with the idle sounds. On one occasion the volume decreased all by itself. I checked for loose wires and could not find any. I am charging the battery at the moment but I tried a BCR and it did the same thing.

Any suggestions?

Don,

I hear the watch dog signal but nothing else.

You cannot hear the watchdog signal, although possibly your engine thinks that it does. I expect that you mean you hear the relay click.

Either your engine is hearing the watchdog signal or it thinks it is. How are you attempting to operate the engine in conventional mode?

Regardless, try the following:

  • Place the engine on a short piece of track that's not on the layout.
  • Connect the track directly to a transformer and turn power up to 18 volts.

If the engine comes up in conventional mode and operates as expected, the engine is fine.
