So I actually don't have a legacy engine just yet because I wanted to ask this question before I buy one. My brother recently gave my his old Lionel Polar Express set from 2007. With this set came the train, coaches, and a CW 80 transformer. I was wondering if I bought a Legacy locomotive that was compatible with it, could I just run the locomotive just from the transformer. Yes I know that I wont be able to use all the features that are built into the locomotive since it is Legacy but would i still be able to simply run the train and have the engine sound. l was wanting to do this so I could have a Legacy train in my collection so that one day when i do buy the #990 set, the remote wont just be sitting in a box for months until i bought a train. I know this is probably a silly question but I'm relatively new to the Legacy trains so i don't know much about them.

"do you have to put the engine into conventional mode? or does it automatically do that when it detects a transformer or something like that."

It automatically detects the Legacy/TMCC signal when a command base is present.  If it doesn't detect a command signal, it defaults to/ works off the track voltage in conventional mode.  It's the absence of the command signal that allows the loco to function in conventional mode.
