The prospect of getting a GP35 from the new catalog to run with my BNSF Genset led me to set up an experiment to see if it was possible. I figured I should avoid finding out later that this doesnt work...

I put my genset on the track with a recent run SD45, just to see if they could be speed matched, and based on messing around, they could not. Over about 7 feet, the distance apart was give or take 2 feet. Its not even close.

I know the genset is intended to run slow, but figured it was a software tweak to the speed tables when it was put in "switcher" mode on the Cab 2. Even after I tried it with the "diesel" setting, it still can't keep up with the SD45 (or gets shoved along).

So... am I missing something here? Some setting or switch in the loco to get it to run "normal" diesel speed? Maybe its not in the software but actually geared down that low?

Kinda annoying, the gensets were only made with a single road number. I dont really want to have to get a dummy to drag around with a single motor diesel either.

Here is a video I remember watching and in the comment part is how he did it.  Hope this helps.

The genset does run at a lower speed than the road engines, however there is a way to make them run at the same speed. First, you must make sure that your switcher is set to DSW ( diesel switcher ) in your engines set up menu under "Type". Second, build your lashup and press "SET". At that point you should get an "Information message" that says SWITCHER LOCO IS NOW SET TO ROAD ENGINE SPEEDS, CLEAR LASHUP TO REVERT. Press "OK" then press "SET".

Yes, you need the Mike Reagan video to figure it out. I just watched it. (It’s right about the 10:00 mark)

Heres the deal for anyone who searches in the future:

this is the standard genset settings

Then you create the lashup

When you press “set” it gives you this warning:

Then just hit OK, then SET again and it’ll run fine.

Manually putting the genset in diesel mode overrides this warning, and apparently makes it not work. So leave it in switcher mode.
