A bunch of folks got together today at Alex Malliae’s to run some trains, swap some stories and have an all around great time.  Before I go any further I’d like to thank Alex for having us over and especially thank his wife Dina for putting up with us and putting out a great spread of Italian food.

Thanks Dina and Alex!

At the event were a few folks from the NJ Hi-Railers and a few from the Mid-America 3-Railers (plus a few others.)  Attending were Alex, Elliott, Doug, Ben, Vinny, Carl (Alex’s dad), Mike, Jim, Mike and the one who certainly wins the award for travelling the furthest – Dave Allen.  Not to mention a few wives!  Forgive me if I forgot anyone.

I personally had a great time and got to meet a few more train folks.  Between the forum, attending York for the first time, Trainstock and now Alex’s I’m starting to meet some terrific folks.

This video (about 7 minutes) shows a few vignettes of Alex’s layout.  Listen closely to the very beginning where Elliott says that you can’t even figure out where the trains will come from, they just appear.  That’s what’s great about Alex’s layout…lots of hidden grades so trains just suddenly seem to appear out of a tunnel or around a bend.   Skip ahead to about the 4:50 mark if you want to get a glimpse of Alex.

Watch it all....Alex's layout if FANTASTIC!   For the best view run it in HD and full screen.

If you don't watch the whole thing make sure you at least look at the screen at 4:00.

Enjoy

P.S. at 1:00 you'll see the new NJ Hi-Railers Rheingold TOFC.  They still have a few left.

Finally....forgive all the chatter in the background.  We were having a great time.

Chris...thanks so much for posting this event.  Alex and Dina have been planning this for the Mid America 3-Railers and others the last few months and I am so happy that you all had a great time.  As some of you know, I had planned on attending but personal events kept me from doing so...darned it!!  Also, Chris, could you post a link to this video on the Mid America 3-Railer site as well as any pictures you might have...these can be posted in the Photo Gallery.

Alex...I hope you got some photos of your get together so that we can post them on the Mid America website.  Thanks so much and I sure missed getting to see all of you great guys!

Thanks,

Alan

Alex, a great big thanks to you and your wife, Dina, for having us over yesterday.  The layout is fabulous and a great reflection of your skill and craftmanship.  I'm surprised I haven't seen this featured in some magazine before.  It was a really nice way to "conclude" York Week, watching trains run and sitting around  sharing a few laughs with fellow hobbyists.

Hi Guys,

So sorry I missed this event. Unfortunately I had to work. Let me start off by saying Dina and Alex are great people. I know first hand she's a great cook!! Alex I'm not so sure. Lol!!

Running trains on Alex's layout is never dull. I ran trains there a few times and I still have a problem figuring out where they're going and what tunnel they're going to come out of. It's really a great track plan and I know that was the effect he was going for when he designed it.

As for his modeling skills, I think he has an awesome eye for detail and hands of gold. The man can build!!

You're all right the layout should have a feature article and be in a video.

Alex,

I'm sorry I couldn't make it there Saturday.  As you know there is no place I would've rather been at that time.

Thanks,
Mike R

I will definitely do a get together again the coming spring/summer. You are welcomed to bring the SIRT S-2 and of course you are invited anytime. Thanks for all you did for me.

Yesterday was one of the nicest rail days I've ever had. Alex and Dina are wonderful hosts, Dina's food's exceptional.

Alex is not only one of the most enthusiastic modelers I've ever met, he's also one of the very best. The layout in his basement is amazing. It's one of those unique creations of scale steamers running on a toy style layout with extremely good and detailed scenery and many quality operating accessories. Five mainlines on five levels, but with changing levels and disappearing trains. To see is to believe. I look forward to this layout being featured in OGR next year, and don't miss this issue, it will be a treat.

Alex's dad, Carl, can be rightly proud of his son.

Alex....as you can see from all of the comments, this is why we are so proud to have you as a member of our Mid America 3-Rail group..

Alex is always recruiting new members into our group with his enthusiasm and talent.  Those of you that want to see more pictures of his event are welcome to view them at our website:  www.midamerica3railers.webs.com where he has posted great views of his layout.  We welcome anyone that is interested in finding out more about us....just contact any member.  Membership is free!!

Again, glad all of you guys were able to get together....and Dina, if you have any leftovers, please send them this way!!

Alan
