Most SHS SW's came with a 3-position electronic reverse unit installed, particularly if it was a set loco. However, SHS would change it to DC or even DCC at customer request.
Try it on DC. If the board is installed, it should cycle forward-neutral-reverse each time the throttle knob is moved off zero, or use the power switch to cycle. The pack's reverse switch should have no effect on direction if moved quickly. Then you can run it on AC.
If the locomotive's direction only responds forward-reverse (no neutral) to the pack's direction switch, then the locomotive is DC only.
The other way is to open it up (not really very easy at first) and see if there's a PC board above the motor.
