The OP mentions 50's flyer and new Lionel S gauge. All original Gilbert AF and the new Flyonel will run on original Gilbert track or on new high rail track Such as American Models, SHS (now MTH) and Lionel S track. It is all compatible with the Gilbert AC transformers. They will not work on S scale track (Code 100 or smaller rail). This requires changing the wheels and possibly couplers. The bigger the track radius the better the trains look. Original Gilbert will also run on DC. Commercially available turnout radii are limited. All high rail turnouts now sold are 20" radius except AM which are 27" radius. S scale turnouts are available for custom order in all needed numbers (4,5,6,8,etc.) Gilbert and Flyonel will not operate through these scale turnouts.
