I have two Lionel scale steam engines that I recently purchased that included "optional" scale pilot wheels.  Why would anyone want the installed "non-scale" wheels?  Lionel manuals make no reference as to why one would want either set.  I'm guessing in advance the scale wheels might present a tracking problem, either going thru certain brands of turnouts or running on certain track styles.

Would someone enlighten me on this, so I don't go thru a wheel set change only to be unpleasantly surprised?

Usually installing scale pilot wheels means bumping the minimum radius up to O-72. Even on a shorter loco like the O-42 rated VL hudson, the ultimate issue is the scale pilot wheels will rub the steam cylinders on turns tighter than o-72. Someone with sharper turns/smaller layout will run the small pilot wheels so they can have a scale loco.
