As I mentioned in my post on the Greenberg Upper Marlboro show I picked up a gorgeous Kline smoking caboose in PRR markings. Has marker lights, smoker works, looks pretty much like it never saw track before I put it down.

It's scale and pulling behind my RK Imperial K-4 I'm beginning to get a real sense of the different sizes. Cabin cars should NOT be that big. I also have an MTH premier N5C caboose I got before I fully understood what the variations were. Same thing.

So I'm thinking, maybe scale sized engines is the way to go, especially if I'm looking at newer command engines. So I flip to MTH's site and look at the imperial RK Mikado I ordered (June delivery) $449, and the premier version, $899! I have to admit it certainly looks more detailed. But is it the size, the detail? that makes scale engines more expensive?

I've noticed that most diesels seem closer to scale. I guess I'll just mix and match best I can.

Who would make the lesser expensive of scale sized steamers? You got Williams, MTH and Lionel. But then again if you go scale, curves are probably an issue, too.

The only scale steam locomotive currently offered by Williams is the Hudson.  Lionel has several scale offerings and several "medium" size steamers that are detailed enough to make it confusing.  Every MTH "Premier" steam engine is full scale, although a few RailKing offerings (like the USRA 0-8-0) are scale-size models of small steam engines.

Not to be the least bit flippant, but in the final analysis a person has to conclude what makes scale locos cost more is that the manufacturers know people will pay those prices.

Five years ago I was a big fan of Lionmaster and RK locos, but since then I have gone almost entirely to only scale locos - I prefer the larger size and like not having to worry/fuss with "different scales" as you encountered with the Imperial K-4 vs. scale caboose.  I think that the Premier and Legacy are not overpriced, but that the Imperial are currently under-priced: maybe I am wrong but I think MTH is making a statement/building market identify for this line now and will gradually increase price.  Regardless, much as I like the Imperial line, I have bought only two because most offerings are noticeably smaller and  don't work well with scale rolling stock or alongside scale locos.   As to the price difference, I keep it in this perspective: better to have two or three really nice scale locos than four or five really nice not-scale locos.

As Wowak said, Williams makes a scale size Hudson.  Other than that you have to search the internet for bargains and you can occasionally find them.
