Railroad Model Craftsman did a series in the 90s that each issue had the details, history, and drawings for a freight car.
Also the NMRA has archives with drawings.
And there are Car Builders Cyclopedias that would have prototype drawings.
RMC has drawings of locos and freight cars we'll befor the 1990's and well into this new century!
I'm convinced that RMC has almost all the North American freight car/ passenger car/ locomotives. The only exception I have found so far are some Canadian models such as the LRC and M425
Try the Trains.com Magazine index which covers around 40 train magazines. You can do an advanced search such as Flat Car Drawing to locate articles. Recent back issues are often available on the magazine's web site. Older back issues can be found on eBay or at train shows.
