I thought I would post a few pictures of a couple of scratch built buildings that a friend of mine built for my O gauge layout. Both of these buildings of course are not finished, they are still "under construction" The big building is our shipping facility where we load RR cars. Be sure to check out the overhead crane!! The smaller building is a yard/maint. office.

John, I wouldn't call slapping some printed cardstock together, scratchbuilt.

Was this really necessary?

Vulcan I would seriously disagree with your observation. As a provider of modular card stock drawings and resin castings I consider anyone who takes my products and creatively selects an architecture and building panels to create a structure to their individual requirements and further enhances the structure with resin castings to reinforce the functionality of the structure a scratchbuilder. What you are suggesting is that anyone who creates a picture but doesn't use oil paints on canvas is not an artist.
I give high praise to the gentelmen who created the buildings for John.

Wow! I have seen your posts in the past complaining more forum members should contribute on the scenery forum. Maybe this type of attitude is the reason why they choose not to.
jjames: I thought buildings were very interesting and would be an asset to most layouts. Thanks for posting.
Happy railroading,
Don
jjames: You have a very nice (and talented) friend. Would like to see how they turn out when all done. So far, they look great.
Regards.
The person, "John," who vulcan was addressing has removed his post and pictures of a rather nicely done cardstock-type O scale version of the Walthers HO Freight House. A real shame because it really wasn't bad at all.
Pete
You mean someone posted a response and has removed their response due to comments that another forum member made?
I always like to see what people do/build. I am not that talented and usually rely on pre-built structures, or if I am lucky, I buy something that someone has built.
There are many things to like about this forum, including the fact that you can start a thread and people will follow it with constructive comments, posts or ideas. I cringe when I read things that exhibit none of those traits.
Regards.

Had to do alot of cleaning to make room for it!! We are thinking as of now putting siding on both ends and the back, leaving the front open for viewing and only putting half a roof on it leaving the front half open for viewing as well. There is another building in the works that will sit next to this one behind it, we are thinking of making that our "pickler line building" where the steel gets an acid bath to clean the surface before moving out to the shipping facility!! Hope you are enjoying yourself!!!!
Jeff
I was not criticizing the quality of the (removed) cardstock building. But, that is, at best, a "kit", not scratchbuilding. You have to put together an Ameri-town building, too, that doesn't make it scratchbuilding. The post was about scratchbuilt buildings.
James,
Thank you for sharing these models, they are very inspiring. I am working on my first ever scratch built structure. Only time will tell how it will turn out. It is a sugar beet loading facility from the SP.
Malcolm
Please post photos of finished model too!
Malcolm,
Post some pics of your progress, would like to see what you are building!! I will post pics when all of these buildings are completed.
Jeff
Here are some photos of a western town I built as part of my amusement park. This is a foam core frame with different surfaces for the texture, such as plastruct, and real wood.

John, your REA building is very much more scratchbuilt than I thought from your original post. I apologize for mis-interpreting.
Jeff, sorry for causing the misdirection.
To those who never post over here, unless they smell something that may be the least bit controversial, I apologize for forgetting that honesty is not the best policy around here.

Jeff, looking very nice---think you can have em finished for Tuesday night for us Greenville Gangs visit? I know i'm asking for a lot---so we'll settle for cake&coffee. See ya Tues. Chet
Chet,
No, I don't think that is asking to much. Maybe we can pull some double shifts and get er' done!! Then again?? See you Tuesday!!!

I wouldn't call that constructive.
Jeff,
I can't wait to see that live and in person! Looks great man!

Great work John

I wouldn't call that constructive.
You're right,it wasn't constructive, it was rude wasn't it? That's what I thought of someone posting pictures on someone elses thread, after just starting five of their own, and then not even acknowledging the original post. It wasn't a "let's see yours" thread. That's what this was all about, not whether or not I liked the building.
I should have just said that from the beginning, but I didn't, I chose to dish out a taste of rude instead.
Live and learn.
I don't post very often here, but I thought I would put up a few pics of my buildings that are patiently waiting to go on my layout, whenever I finish building the benchwork... I get a lot of good ideas from others on the scenery forum, so maybe somebody will get inspired from these.
This is a little colliers' building I put together, not quite a coaling tower!

Wow some really nice work here, just awesome
Thanks, Alex
I like em all
Hi Tom,
Glad to here you are coming with the gang, see you tuesday night!!
Jeff
This thread is very confusing.
This thread is very confusing.
Yes!
Sometimes it's hard to distinguish a "here's mine - show me yours" type thread, from one that is really "here's mine - how do you like it".
Posting your own photos to the second type is intrusive and can be interpreted as an attempt at "one-up-man-ship". That was Vulcan's point.
If in doubt, I try to err on the side of caution and not post my photos unless the intent of the original poster is clear.
But, we're all friends here on the scenery forum. If one of us steps on a toe now and then - no big deal IMO.
Jim
Good morning everyone!
I personally do not have a problem with someone else posting there pictures on a thread say I started, I say the more the merrier!! I look at this stuff as not all that important to get excited about, it is just a bunch of toys for our enjoyment to play with and share with others should you choose. I have way more important "life" issues to worry about other than the forum. Just my thoughts guys & gals. Have fun and enjoy "our" hobby before something happens in our lives that lets us not enjoy this great hobby anymore.
Regards,
Jeff James
At the risk of being accused of getting this thread back to the original topic.. Jeff, what is the source of those overhead light fixtures? They look bigger (and better) than the standard lamp shade offerings by Miniatronics and the like
Hi John,
Those lamp shades are from Plaststruct. They have a bunch of different kinds of plastic, styrene,ABS,etc plus all kinds of fittings, values, piping. There are even different size lamp shades available. There website is www.plastruct.com they are out of Calif.
Jeff
Scratch me from the scratch-built tour at Jeff's. I'm bummed! Went to open the garage door to hop into my Silverado.....the door would not go up! The dang support bracket on one side was all bent up...the track was bent and the cable snapped! Chunks of ceiling all over my truck.....UGHHHHH !!!
I called Lynn to let him know I'm house bound and he gives a good suggestion for a garage door company.
Well.....no cake for me tonight.....sigh.....Chet can eat my share.....have fun guys.....take some pix!!?? Tom
Tom,
Hope you get your door straightened around! I will post a few pictures tommorrow of the evenings events here at train night!! You can get ahold of me anytime for a visit to the layout if you would like.
Talk to you soon,
Jeff James
Jeff, thanks for a great evening ----Tom's share of the that spice cake that I ate was oh so yummie. Thanks again Buddy. Chet
jeff...good time at train nite..enjoyed it all..my house on sunday..jp
Jeff,
I liked the coil building with the crane very much and I even saw past it. I looked at your plastic ground cover containers and saw a real nice future oil terminal. That would fit right in with that coil building. Who cares what you build, imagination is everything.

Thanks for the invitation, Jeff. You are welcome to visit here in Freeport anytime. Pick Chet up on the way ....stop at Giant Eagle so he can buy me some cake, and we'll run some trains! Tom in PGH
