So I have an older D&RGW SD40T-2 (6-28542) and the sound started to crackle when starting up. I don't know what compelled me to but I turned the volume pot up and down, as that had worked before, but then it didn't. The first video shows an example of what happened. Someone suggested that I replace the volume pot so I ordered the part off of Lionel's parts website. When I finally got around to doing so I noticed that the pots were different (see picture), including the connectors. Tracing the speaker wires lead to a connecter that was much larger and had other wires to it, so I took the wires off both volume pots and just soldered the new pot on with the original wires in the same exact position in the old pot.
Though now the issue has become that while it's not crackling anymore the sound is extremely low, with the volume pot turned to max and the remote having volume on max as well, I had to get the mic really close to have it be picked up on the second video. I'm not exactly sure what it could be that's causing this or what I could do to fix it since I'll be the first to admit that I am not super tech savvy with a lot of this.
