I have the Cass Shay #7 that has separated the shaft at the gear coming from the drive motor.  It is connected to the front shaft but spins in side of the rear shaft.  I can't see where there is a pin missing or a screw to hold the gear shaft inside of the drive shaft.  I hesitate to put a drop of super glue in there for fear of messing things up.

From my point of view no I went to the web site to see if parts are available and the manual, tires, and smoke fluid are all that it shows. Guess I'll be. I siting he Lionel booth at York to see if they have any ideas. Since parts are not availae I'm really hesitant to try drilling a pin into the shaft or even trying super glue.

Its not clear which model you have, #7 comes up as a TMCC. Again, the item# would help, plenty of parts available for these:

Something like half the real problems I've seen discussed on this forum with Lionel locos have to do with the Legacy shay, I think.  I have one and it doesn't run really well on O-036 - a slightly binding in the driveshaft expansion joint I think, but I wasn't able to fix it.  does great on O-42 and up.  There is also some issue with the rear coupler, too, which is fixable with the right parts, etc.  Because I really wanted to run mine only on O-36, its a shelf queen now.

Lee,

Thank you sir I appreciate the 036 knowledge, does the Shay have Command Control Couplers, or are they track operated?  Still considering all this and would really like to have one.  Is there room to modify the area side to side and retouch the frame to allow the Shay to run on 036 track for pulling logging cars, I have one section of 036 track coming into a  072 WYE CC FasTrack switch, that I am going to be unable to redesign without really expanding my platform.

I'd probably send a detailed email regarding the issue to the Lionel techs at the Service/Repair Question link here : Lionel contact us

I've have gotten lots of help regarding my own repairs via that link. Its been my impression that the "techs" read the emails. Calling puts you through " customer service", I don't know how much/often the repair guys can take direct phone calls.
