This is cool, I hope they receive good proposals.
It would be nice to see that leg of the former Manassas Gap RR come back into operation again.
A new place to run 611 perhaps?

What's the historic ownership of this line - Southern? N&W? Seabord? ACL?
Did it have block signals and/or passenger service?

Tom,
Most of this line was part of the "Valley RR" in which Robert E. Lee had a part in its building, running up the main portion of the Shenandoah Valley to Winchester, unlike the N&W that ran up the east side of the Massanutten Mt. range. The B&O RR took it over. It was surveyed to extend into the Roanoke valley coming into the area closer to Salem, Va. Lexington was as far as the rail line made it south although there are many culverts along the intended ROW that can still be found in our area and several bridges and ROW can clearly be seen along parts of I-81.
The line connecting and running over to Riverton, Va. is part of the Southern RR.
"The Valley Railroads of Virginia" is a good book written about the history of the line including a map of its complete proposed ROW.
Thanks for the good information, Jim.
