Somebody please correct me if I am wrong, but as far as I know there has never been a mass produced model of the Daylight in S scale. Now that MTH is in the game is the market ripe for an S scale Daylight and AFT 4449? Is this an opportunity for either Lionel or MTH to be the first, what to you think? Would you order one?

I would order one but there must be variations for a manufacturer to justify production. The 4449 also came in Freedom train colors and the GS4 also existed without streamlining. Not sure if any other roads had similar engines.

There is a brass GS4 that was offered some time ago. I don't remember who produced it though. WP had some GS6's that were diverted from an SP order during WWII. The quick and easy spotting difference was the single headlight for the GS6 vs. the double headlight on the GS4. There are more subtle differences I'm sure. 4449 has worn many paint schemes in both carriers.

Overland made the brass GS4.
There's no reason as to why MTH or Lionel couldn't offer a GS4, unless they wouldn't see a market for it. But, I wouldn't doubt that we see one from either or both. Maybe even an N&W "J."
Every now and then the cry goes out for a scale USRA light 2-8-2. The response has always been "but Overland made one" (back in the 80's!!!)
There used to be an "unspoken rule" in S that if someone made a locomotive the other manufacurers wouldn't try to step on the other's toes, mainly due to the relatively small market.
I think with Lionel getting more aggressive with Flyer and MTH in the mix, that thinking will fall by the wayside.

And that is my number 1 issue with S. Pretty much why I am passing time playing with my son on his O gauge layout until I see where S is going... It will need to change drastically in several ways if it is going to be a long term viable scale for me to model in. Time will tell. A 4449 and/or J would be a step in the right direction, but if Lionel /MTH did it and didn't do scale flanges I wouldn't be interested.
