Is it possible to re-wire an MTH PS1 diesel so it runs slower in a fashion similar to the popular Williams modification?

Yes. Just do it the same way you do the Williams. The motors are very similar.
Here is the Williams by Bachmann diagram to help you. Just apply the same idea to your PS1 locomotive. Trace the wires back to the motors. The wires will be different colors, but the Bachmann diagram should help. I series wired a K-Line GG1 using this diagram...the wires were brown and gray IIRC. It helps to draw it out on a piece of paper.
Please let us know how that works out. I've done it plenty of times for a Williams but not a PS-1.
Here one I did on an MTH PS1 steamer. Will also work for dual motored diesels with the motors left in parallel.

Thanks, I've give this a try shortly. Recently acquired a PS1 loco and I decided I can live with it the way it is if I could just slow it down.
I have done the Paired Diode string to slow a PS-1 Galloping goose.
I'm still fiddling with the string length to get the speed right.
Since it's single motor the williams fix is not applicable.
I re-wired my dual motor PS1 diesel ala the Williams mod and it worked just fine. I would even say that the taming/slow down effect is even more pronounced with the PS1 loco. Still got plenty of throttle left. Nice and smooth.
I don't need any of my locomotives to run at 1,500 MPH anyway.
Despite all of these good electronic solutions I find that I can start these engines slowly with some gentle throttle control with my Z 4000
