Recently picked up a Lionel 6-18057  671 S-2 Turbine. It's been running fine for a few weeks. This weekend I noticed a high pitch whine from the engine, possibly the Smoke Fan being stuck on. I also notice an odor coming from where the smoke would come out.

I've tried turning the smoke fan on & off in Command Control mode: Eng ID - Aux 1 - 9 & Eng ID - Aux 1 - 8. No effect.

Any ideas before I start taking the engine apart? I have all the smoke switches set to the "Off" position on my other command control engines, but this locomotive does not have a Smoke On/Off switch.

Thanks

Bruce

I have this engine.  Bought it new from Lionel.  There are no switches for the smoke unit.  The fan is always on.  The smoke control only turns the element on and off.  This is normal and correct behavior.  If you are getting an odor, it could be that it needs new smoke batting.  Other than that it sounds like it is working fine.

Thanks Marty and Joe. If the fan is always on, the noise must be coming from something else. I ran the locomotive for weeks and it didn't make any noise at all when sitting idle, this just started happening this past weekend.

Will take the shell off this weekend and see if there's anything obvious inside that's causing the mid-high pitch whine.

Thanks everyone!

Bruce

Was the smoke coming out in a steady flow before when it wasn't making noise, or do you have smoke disabled (as mentioned above, only turns the power off for the resistor heating the fluid)?  Maybe something was impeding the fan and got jarred loose, freeing the fan to move?

I' m with the others, this sounds like you may be taking something apart that is working normally.  I am sure there is some "whirring" that can be annoying I guess, depending on how sensitive your ears may be.
