Smoke problems Legacy F-3

Unless the smoke board has fried, there's no reason to replace it.  Try tightening the screws that hold the resistor, then measure the resistance across pins #1 (RAW) and #2 (HTR) on the smoke unit, it should be within about 10% of 8 ohms.  If it's less than 7 ohms or greater than 9 ohms, replace the resistor.

If that's all good, check the wiring between the RCMC and the smoke unit.  Finally, it could be the RCMC smoke output.

I put the meter on it and 0 resistance.  I will order a new one.  Is that resistor held on with screws or solder? Thanks again. Art

The resistor is secured with screws.  If it truly has zero resistance, I'm a bit surprised you're not getting a smoke error blink code.  I suspect that maybe the board smoke output got zapped in the process.

Is there a substitute for that board?  I will order the resistor. Again, thanks for the help.Art

You missed the point, the "board" I refer to is the RCMC main board, not the smoke PCB.  First step it to make sure the smoke unit and wiring is 100%, then see if you still have the problem.

I replaced the RCMC. The smoke unit is the problem.  I took it apart and rechecked the resistor - 0 resistance.   In the process noted that the fan blades were melted to the body and the fan motor was not accessible unit in the powered . The only solution is a new unit but those show unavailable.  There is what seems to be identical a unit in the powered F-3 see my post just a few minutes ago.  Thanks Art

Sorry, I thought I had those in the original post but I guess this is a new post. This evidently is new.  Ok , the unit I an working on is a 38710. the only part number I can find is 691vsmke02 which is labeled as smoke unit 8 ohm rs-11.  The powered unit I have is 38708 and the unit looks similar smoke unit #6308472200.  In advance thanks for your help.  Art

The body of this one is diecast, I think the body of the ones you mention are plastic.  I don't know if they're compatible without actually seeing them.  They obviously have the same PCB...

Thanks for all you help. The latest is that the impeller is no longer available (6308472225). I am just going to replace the whole unit.  When I started this I did not realize that was an option.  Will let you know if it works.  Art

You might be able to use a similar sized impeller, it befuddles me that Lionel has all the different sizes, and obviously some of them unavailable!
