I have a Legacy F-3 6-38710 with smoke problems. I had the mother board fail and replaced it.  The fan is running (no great volume) but no smoke.  with the shell off, I don't feel ant heat coming from the smoke unit.  In going to the Lionel web site it shows the smoke board as unavailable. I am sure that there are other units with the same board but no equivalent is indicated. Before I take this thing apart I would like to know if there is a fix. Web does show a resistor available. Is it possible that the resistor failed?  How do you separate it from the board?  If someone has repaired this problem, I would appreciate the help.

Secondly, I am going to replace the batting but where do I find that product.

Thanks for your help Art

Unless the smoke board has fried, there's no reason to replace it.  Try tightening the screws that hold the resistor, then measure the resistance across pins #1 (RAW) and #2 (HTR) on the smoke unit, it should be within about 10% of 8 ohms.  If it's less than 7 ohms or greater than 9 ohms, replace the resistor.

If that's all good, check the wiring between the RCMC and the smoke unit.  Finally, it could be the RCMC smoke output.

I replaced the RCMC. The smoke unit is the problem.  I took it apart and rechecked the resistor - 0 resistance.   In the process noted that the fan blades were melted to the body and the fan motor was not accessible unit in the powered . The only solution is a new unit but those show unavailable.  There is what seems to be identical a unit in the powered F-3 see my post just a few minutes ago.  Thanks Art
