I recently picked up a nice looking Lionel F-3 dummy that I think was part of set 6-14588. It started making a high pitched whine that changed in pitch when I changed the throttle speed (using a postwar ZW). This was while running in conventional mode. As soon as I unplugged the power to the smoke unit it the whine stopped. Is there anything else I should do so it does not blow everything up? I do not want to repair the smoke unit, if I am good to go with it unplugged, that is how it will stay.

Below is a picture of the engine, I did not take one with the shell off.

You engine technical parts listing  https://www.lionelsupport.com/...A-PWR-A-19-DMY-A-19C

This detail from the parts listing tells us a KEY POINT- this is a smoke unit with an EXTERNAL regulator.

So yes, you can unplug the smoke unit 3 wire/pin connector- basically you are unplugging from the regulator.

The actual problem is likely the fan motor just needs lubed or replaced.- But you said you did not want to repair.

Not sure the exact motor as there are 2 types/sizes and hole mounting patterns. Not to mention, many of us use MTH smoke fan motors when they fit for repairs.

I also would turn off the smoke switch just as an extra measure https://www.lionelsupport.com/...ents/71-4588-250.pdf

Vernon covered everything. If you don't want to open the engine up and disconnect the pin connector hit the switch on the bottom of the engine in the diagram to turn it off, but I agree that for extra measure do both. You just don't want current going to the 8-ohm resistor.

I can tell you I had a smoke unit go bad recently, but it was extremely noisy and did not produce any smoke. Replaced the smoke unit motor and it worked but was noisy. Took it apart AGAIN and lubricated the motor. Worked for a bit but is back to a that classic whine. Nothing concerning just annoying, so I completely understand where you're coming from. This is unfortunately a common issue.
