Most all Williams smoke units are Seuthe. Best use their smoke fluid and make sure it gets refilled or turn the unit off. They burn up easily if dry.

Thanks for the quick reply. I have never before had a Williams smoke unit. Do I put the fluid directly down the stack? How much fluid should be put in at one time?
Randy,
I wish I knew the answer to your question! I don't use smoke so I turned the smoke on mine off.
I also converted it to 2 rail using American Scale Models brass trucks that were specifically used on the N5b cabin. It is riding a hair low so it needs some short spacers. I'm also trying to figure out how to get the Kadee coupler boxed on without screwing through the floor. Huge improvement. Lionel's 3 rail trucks for the N5b cabin also have the correct configuration. It won't smoke either.
Regardless, these Williams brass cars are nice finds when you can pick them up. Enjoy yours!
Johnathan, you might be able to do this if you don’t mind moving the trucks inward a bit. This was done on the woodsided NYC version which have the trucks way to far out. Yours might be of similar construction. You can use the truck mount to mount the coupler. I only use one screw after cutting the bracket to fit. It will rest tightly against the new bolster so it won’t pivot. Then just add a bolster inward of that to mount the trucks. Right up against the original mount. I used one from Shapeways for an Atlas car.
I ordered the PRRT&HS society book on PRR Cabin cars from 1860 onwards. I'll be curious to see what the actual truck spacing is on the N5b. I have three scale versions with the Williams, Lionel, and Walthers variations. That will help me decide what to do regarding the couplers. As for the smoke unit, I'll have to pull mine out. I wonder if the top of the stack comes off to add fluid?

Randy, if it is a Seuthe unit I would start out with 4-6 drops. If you can see a brass tube maybe .030” in diameter in the center of the bore then its a Seuthe unit. If its working you will hear a little sizzle and some smoke coming out. There is no fan.
