The TCA has never turned its back on operators. As long as I've been a member, there have been plenty of members who are both operators and collectors.
Some folks think that changing the character of the Eastern Division's York train show is going to magically breath new life into the hobbies relating to "O" gauge trains.
It won't.

I - Layout Refinements - will not be at my customary spot this York Meet in the Orange Hall. Last October, once again, like at the October 2013 Meet, I completely Sold Out of my "Insta-Ramas" and have not been able to replenish my inventory sufficient to justify (only 5 scenes crafted, to date,) a presence.

But I wish, sincerely, the best of health, safety, and good times to all of you who are going, as part of our very unique hobby experience.

As long as work doesn't spring any unexpected surprises on me I plan on making my first venture to York.  I don't plan on buying anything (famous last words) but feel I might be missing something if I don't do this just once.  A 2 1/2 hour drive is simple enough.  This is one of those moments when I just don't want to look back in 10 years or so and say "I wish I had when I had the chance".  Based on the comments I suspect it will be a long day but other than that my rule #1 will be in force.  Expect nothing and you will likely be delighted.  Expect something and you are sure to be disappointed.  My only expectation here is there will be lots of trains and perhaps something that interests me.

My advice would be that you take plenty of drinks with you, such as Ensure and/or other nutrition drinks. I think a lot of us spend too long walking around without giving ourselves fluids. And cold sodas are not the total answer, though bracing at times, for sure. Don't starve yourself and do not parch yourself. Drink. Often.

BTW, the Orange Hall has a small ice cream stand near the front doors that has wonderful milkshakes that really do help!

There truly is nothing in the world like "York", An experience that everyone involved with trains should attend at least once! That having been said, I have never cared for the spring show, always too many things at home going on, however, the fall show has always been a gateway for the holiday season, this fall may be my last. at this time I intend to try to attend Oct. Time will tell.....

While they are certainly cooling/refreshing, I would think Milkshakes and Ice Cream would be just as bad as soda in terms of not being what you really need to keep hydrated?

There are H2O fountains at least in the Orange and Blue/Silver hall lobbies.  (maybe elsewhere too, but those were the immediate ones that came to mind)

Oh, and to the original topic, I will not be "not going" ...(I like the way Marty thinks!)

I will be somewhat abbreviated this meet though.  I already will be missing the Museum on Wednesday, and I'm not 100% sure on Thursday yet.  So not going to the Museum could count I guess.

Not going also. I generally go to the Oct show, but frankly between ebay and internet stores I have been able to find more of the things I have been looking for (particularly craftsman structure kits and detail parts) and at usually better prices than I've been able to find at York. Its probably time for me to skip several shows so I can better appreciate it when I do go.

Some folks here have good reasons.  Nothing wrong with that.  Then you have the few that look for any bully pulpit to preach their dislike of all things TCA and York.

Whomever can you be referring to?

Dave45681, By the time I am midway through my day, I discover I need FOOD so I dive for a portable, handy-dandy shake and/or dish of ice cream, as opposed to anti-heart-burgers. That way I can sit at my booth and imbibe at least some useful calories and sugar-hit. When there is a lull, I go out to my car (usually cooking in the hot sun by then) and consume some canned chicken and some fruit. That's my story.

I joined for only one reason:  York.  There may be a point in the future where I may have a need to leverage the benefits and resources of TCA (stuff in the museum/library), but not yet.  If my membership helps in the process of securing a strong future for the hobby, happy to pay even more than $50 per year.

I think Burfle will agree with me on this one:  Kudos to TCA ED.  There are  a number of folks that bust their butts to organize this event, many people who labor to set it up and tear it down, and countless hours of personal time spent many months in advance to make sure it runs well.

If you can attend, enjoy.  If not, perhaps next time.  If you dislike TCA, 1st amendment gives you the right to express and have those opinions.  If you love TCA, then see if maybe you can volunteer to help in some way to make even better this really nice hobby.

To the original poster - hope you can make the fall event!

Many folks on this board have stated that they only belong to the TCA to attend York.

Thanks to everyone for replying to this thread. I have been attending York twice each year since 1993.

I am not going this April because I have a bad back and there is too much walking and carrying boxes of trains back to the car for me to enjoy this time.

Once I get my back fixed in a few months I will be able to go back to York for the October meet.

It was difficult for me to pass on my trip this April, and now, I feel like I am going through withdrawal.

I don't know about most of you but just being around so many different trains puts me into a happy mood.

Talking and buying trains is so much fun, being around so many nice people listening to some who are doing well selling and others who say they will never come back is fun.

Most of the ones who say that they will not be back most likely will be there in October.

All the different buildings, people, old trains, new trains and every train in-between is still one of the best reasons I stay a member in the T C A.

Life is getting shorter for some of us, so let's just enjoy our love of the hobby and the love of trains and Enjoy York!

Frank,

I hope I didn't offend with my comment, it wasn't my intent.

I guess we can agree that not too much of what is sold on the fair grounds is health food.

Your routine of bringing your own for later is a good one.  The few recent occasions where I've had a table I brought a cold bag and some cold cuts to make sandwiches for each day manning the table.

Burgers bad for the heart can definitely be true.  I'm not there yet, but I suspect I better watch the sugars also if I don't want to end up diabetic in some years down the road, so that is why I was lumping the ice cream and shakes in with sodas.

God Bless Ya Spence...and you did at a company that IMO treats the employees like "machines"...Im back behind the wheel myself (locally) after a 9 year break at a inside job but the place closed so I had to go back to driving...glad I kept the CDL current !

The thought of driving to York tonight absolutely turns my stomach ...but I still do it every year.

Yes, I do agree.

By the way, I see nothing wrong with joining the TCA just to attend the York show.
To each their own!

Its funny though, when I joined the TCA, I didn't foresee going to York. I was interested in the publications (including the swap sheets) and networking with other local collectors. I certainly have not attended every York since joining, but I've made it to quite a few.

I'm not going.  I've been to York once a few years ago during the Spring and it was amazing!  I was hoping to go this Spring, but now it may be fall if at all this year.

It was definitely worth the experience and seeing many friends there.  I never saw so much o gauge at the bandit meets and the fairgrounds.  Just mind blowing.

Not at all, sir. (I don't get fussy like that.) I just took the occasion of your reply to give further explanation of how I nourish and attempt to hydrate myself at the Meet, hoping to be helpful in response to Necrail's posting with some thoughts to consider.
