You can put a PS-2 3V sound file into a PS-3 engine. I am not sure about a PS-2 5V, I don't think so. G
You can load any 3 volt PS2 sound file into a PS3 engine.

If the tender has a round battery charging jack, it is a 5V/PS2

The engine sound file for 30-2273-1 should be a 5 volt sound file and will not work in a ps-3 engine. There is no upgrade 3 volt file for this engine at this time as per MTH website.
But there are a lot of NW-2 3V files available, and the sounds set may be similar. G
do you know if a 5v file Can be used
It cannot.
Here is a post I saved from Barry a while back on what sound files can be used with different PS versions.

The "rules" for swapping sound files are:
· You can put a 5 volt PS2 file only in a 5 volt PS2 engine
· You can put a 3 volt PS2 file in a 3 volt PS2 engine, or in a PS3 engine
· You can put a PS3 file only in a PS3 engine
· You cannot put a PS3 file in any PS2 engine (3 volt or 5 volt).

And here is a post from Dave Hikel explaining the PS file names. Attached is the same file Dave posted from that thread.

I've attached a pdf to this post that gives a break down of MTH's file nomenclature. This breaker down applies to most 5 volt PS2 files, virtually all 3 volt PS2 files, and all PS3 files. There were early 5 volt files from 2000-2001 that did not follow this naming convention.
If you look through the chart carefully you will note that there are a few items I haven't figured out. If you or anyone else has additional info please post it and I will add it to the break down chart.

PS2 and PS3 sound file names explained.pdf
Given Dave's close association with MTH, I'm a bit surprised he can't find out exactly how the files are named.
gunrunnerjohn, the post the info came from is almost a year old, maybe Dave has more info since then? Maybe Barry has something to add? Barry's info was from same post. It would be nice if MTH would post all of the info about sound files and their naming. Guess a lot of that's probably proprietary info though?
Here's the link to the original post if you or anyone else is interested.
(For once I saved something and then was able to find it again later)
Maybe the sound engineers do what they want when they want... That is what the old QSI guy told me about the QSI PS-1 software. I think the format is just too random at times, even if they have tightened up how they do it now. G
