I am thinking about buying an LTI engine from 1992 with original RailSounds and I would like to know how primitive the sound is compared to RS 5.0?

Real primitive. It's not a lot more than a sort of static scratching sound that repeats faster as the train goes faster. Not really realistic, but most are at least loud. But it's entertaining and, well, it's what that loco has. I have several early Railsounds: better than nothing, I guess.
When the first RailSounds units came out they were truly state of the art and a big improvement over the old Mighty Sound of Steam sound system. Now, however, the early Railsounds units do sound incredibly crude but as Lee states better than nothin'.
I remember getting the steam Railsounds REA boxcar for my birthday in 91. I thought I was in heaven! It's nothing like what we have now....but revolutionary for the time!

Cool in it's day, but very crude by todays standards.

Very primitive by today's standards (like a VHS to a modern Blu-Ray), but definitely nostalgic for a kid growing up in the early 90's.
Most of the conventional engines I have RailSounds 1.0 (i.e. the scale Hudson, B-6, Southern Mikado) and they have held up relatively well for the most part.
Depending on which engine as well the sound pitches and volume effects will be slightly different. The earliest engines with it, such as the Reading T-1 and Pennsy B-6, were noticeably weaker in sound than the later ones, like the Southern Mikado and D&RG ALCO ABA.
Better than nothing , but overall, Bad
Thanks for the comments and Steve for the video. I should have mentioned it is an F-3 diesel.
