I run my layout with two TIU's in the super mode. I purchased a third TIU as a spare, so I have three TIU's and three remotes. Everything is 4.1 and all the remotes have identical engines and ID's. I loaded this third TIU into my system, it thinks there are three TIU's, even though I don't have it powered up or wired to anything for use. In fact, I use it for the under the tree layout at Christmas. My question is - is there any downside for having this third TIU in the system even though it's not being used? I'm pleased with the system and not having any particular problems. I guess I'm wondering if the response time is being affected here. I'll welcome any thoughts on this.

If the third TIU has a number that's not the same as the two other TIUs and if that number TIU has been added to the remotes, then if that TIU is turned off it could create a delay whenever the remote has its READ button pressed, when adding, editing or deleting engines, and possibky at other times.
If you operate in Super TIU mode, things can get worse. I suggest that, if you aren't using that TIU in your layout, you remove it from your remotes.
Thanks for responding Barry.I'm afraid I'll need a little more help with this though. What TIU number are you referring to? It is TIU 3 in the system. Where do I find it? Is this in the book somewhere? By the way, I'm wondering how I went from brakeman to new member.I just renewed my subscription, but I always wondered if there is a definition of these terms somewhere. Thanks again. George

Unfortunately, DCS will allow you to add tiu to your remote whether you own one or not.
So how do you know what tiu you actually have? When you first power up a tiu the red led on top "blinks" . the number of blinks is actually the tiu ID or number. (1 blink, your tiu is tiu #1)........(2 blinks , tiu is tiu #2)....... (3 blinks tiu is tiu #3) etc up to 5 blinks.
you can only change a tiu's address with the edit tiu address command or a factory reset which restores a tiu to it's default number of 1.
George,
Will I lose any stored data when doing this?
You would only lose anything in the remote that was associated with TIU #3 directly. This include engines that were added to TIU #3, and any accessories and switch tracks connected to AIUs on TIU #3.
Further, any Custom Sounds or Record/Playback sessions saved in TIU #3 would become inaccessible until TIU #3 is again added back to the remote.
Barry, I made the changes and I do notice an improvement in the response time of the system. Thanks for your advise. George
