You can get plenty of good enclosed small speakers these days. The key to good sound is having the power to play them. If you listen to music on a stereo system it bounces along at 1-2 watts of power. The peaks (bass) hit about 10 times that. Cars in the 50s had a 3 x 5 inch speaker only powered by a 3-5 watt radio. That's why they sounded tin like. Invest in a 10-20 watt power supply and you'll like it much better. (I should point out that solid state power supplies have much higher numbers than one with tubes. A 50-100 watt in solid-state is about the same.)

More info on the application would help.  Assuming you want to play sound effects from the structure and as long as you don't need much bass below 100 Hz, something like this speaker meant for a flat panel TV would work well and get loud enough for clear audio 10' away (based on the speaker efficiency and power handling specs).
