You didn't say if this engine has done this since day one or it used to operate OK. Regardless, typical culprits are:

  • If one thumbwheel click causes a runaway, the tach reader may be too distant (or too close?) to the flywheel
  • If speed is just too fast proportionately, as in it's a percentage too fast at all speeds, a damaged tach tape or porous painted stripes on the flywheel is often the problem. The solution is to replace the tape or usea  tape to cover the painted stripes
  • Again, if speed is just too fast proportionately, it could be an error in the engine's sound file.
