Hello everyone,

I wanted to add passengers to these cars, after looking at the original ESE cars which have very detailed interiors. I had to spice up these new interiors to look somewhat like the original ones which are stunning to say the least. I started with the observation car, they all come apart quite easy and just a few small circuit boards to get out of the way. Then on to get them painted with passengers inside.

I used a  Rust-o-leum red spray  for the base color and a beige, dark blue, and white for accent colors. To me it made a tremendous difference to to look of these cars.

Thanks for looking,

Alex

Alex, by special permission of the Vice President - Mechanical, your personal record has been awarded an additional ten merits for superior realistic decoration of the interior of your passenger cars.  This is a highly unusual event, as the Company normally allows a maximum of ten merits to accumulate on any personal record.  Well done!

Alex,  great job. I'm in the process of adding some complete interiors to several coaches with the 2 lite bulbs and decals of people in the windows. They used to be fine but not any more!  What people did you use?   I notice that MTH has several "passsenger" packages in their Ready to Run catelog.  I also need to acquire/make seats, tables, counters etc.  Any suggestions??  Thanks, Merry Christmas and GREAT JOB!

Alex, What a fine job but we'd expect no less from you. The "plain vanilla" look of the stock interiors is unappealing but Lionel made it relatively easy to get at the interiors and improve them.

In response to a question raised above, actually those do not look like K-Line interiors, which came with a massive number of holes in the floor for the interior furnishings to be fitted to and the furnishings were usually in color rather than a plain finish. But I see your point and think that these interiors, however plain, are an improvement. And the ESE set being shown is definitely ABS, not metal.

"Not sure why Lionel cheapened up their sets in this regard"

Probably nothing personal, but my guess would to keep the b****ing about price/cost to a minimum

Charlie, I can see where you're going.  But honestly, I doubt that had anything to do with it, in the sense that Lionel doesn't give a hoot if we think something is too expensive or not.  They most likely opted to go with the bland interior w/o passengers because it lowered THEIR internal cost.

P.S.  Alex, your customization of the interiors makes for a night-and-day difference. Simply spectacular!!!

I was under the impression that these cars ship from the factory with ZERO passengers.  It's a step down for sure from Lionel's treatment of the interiors of their aluminum passenger cars since they phased out passenger silhouettes in the windows around the turn of the century, IIRC.

But the corporate party line will emphasize cheaper consumer cost (vs. the Chinese providing interior details as standard fare) AND the ease with which the interiors can be accessed so consumers can make these enhancements on a DIY basis.  Don't be surprised to also hear an inference that each modeler may want their passenger cars populated differently,  so "We thought we'd leave that decision up to each consumer."

Hello everyone,

Thanks very much for the nice comment's !!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ron, i agree it does add a lot of depth and warmth

Bill, the figures are all from China, i use the cheapest because you can't really see them.

Mike, i added all the figures, it doesn't come with any.

Tom, your post meant a lot to me, thank you very much!!!!!!

JR Junction, i have the original ESE cars, so i just tried to use the same colors.

John, i use the cheapest people i can find, because you can't really see them. They are from China.

Kevin, those cars won't leave me basement, lol So they won't be coming to train Stock

Hot Water, i don't think there's anything i can do about the doors. It might get very involved

Once again I thank you all for the input and great comment's

PS I will update this thread once i get a coach car complete.

Thanks,

Alex

David;

That was exactly what Mike Reagan said at the York demo I attended in October. There would be no right answer - someone would say too many bodies, someone else, too few. He did point out that Lionel was going to offer sets of passengers, I think next year. He then touted how easy it would be to do a DIY fix since there were, I think, two screws holding the top to the car.

Alex

Which people did you use? I added both K-line and RMT Beepeople (they are the same) to most of my K-line 15" cars months ago. The Golden Gate people are smaller and less detailed but they fit nicely in the upper seating of the Vista Domes.

After seeing what you did I should have painted the interiors before I did them. Too much work to unglue he figures now. I'll have to do it to my 8 Pennsylvania Era of Modernism cars.

Mike
