Hello,

Has anyone published clearance data for Standard Gauge similar to that published for scales such as O, S, and HO?  I'm trying to make a clearance/check gauge for my STD Gauge toolbox similar to those that are available in other scales; I figured it would help me with clearances when modifying my layout.  I realize that Standard Gauge is not a "scale" per se, but I wanted to craft a gauge tool out of aluminum sheet or acrylic that would serve as a quick reference.  I did a quick search of the Forum and the references I found are all over the mark.  Any thoughts?

There is an old topic on what Standard Gauge is to scale. However, it's a range. I have a few different engines and cars, and they are all different. Think of it like O27 and O gauge. The 400e, the Super 381 and the Brute are massive engines that will demand the highest clearances. The Ives 1134 and the Lionel 390e are smaller in comparison. Lionel made two different size freight cars (not counting the 100 series). The 500 series cars are smaller and the 200 series cars have bigger trucks and are larger and taller. Also, it's not just height, swing is a big deal. I lash-up two 400e engines and they need a lot of swing and a straight when approaching my Hellgate bridge.

Also, throw all this out the window if you plan on ordering one of Jim Waterman's massive engines with over six drivers!

George
