Ladies & Gentlemen,

Last year during the Christmas season one of the forum members advised me of the Stanley Indoor Remote System, at the time it was on sale at Harbor Freight for about $12.00  I bought one of these little systems, thinking it probably would not work all that well, was I surprised, I now use it on my train layout, tree and seperate elevated street car line.  Although I can not remember who advised me of this little Stanley remote control System, I want to thank him and pass along this great idea once more, for the rest of the forum.  It works great!  The price is now over $23.00 for the little system and the Monroeville HF store can not keep them on the rack, I know I just purchased another one, it was the last one they had in stock.

Barry,

It plugs into your 120 outlet, infact you get three remote plugs, they are controllable from the supplied hand held remote by push button, even works thru most walls.  The hand held remote control has a mini antenna that make it work real well.  So you just plug what ever you want into the remote control plug, and you have remote control for your preset DCS system, switches and what ever else you desire.

I went to the Harbor Freight website and searched for Stanley Indoor Wireless Remote.  The response was 22 links for staples.  Online service like this doesn't make for happy customers.

By the way, how do you actually use the wireless remote?  Is it just a power on/off switch?

Chuck

Too broad of a search, leave out the "Stanley" and it comes right up.

Indoor Wireless Remote

Chuck,

Like I said they can not keep this item on the shelf, especially at Christmas time.

If you know of another HF store call them and see it they have one left.

The system simply turns off and on any devise plugged into it, from the mini Stanley hand held controller.  Great stuff for my preset transformers running DCS and for switch power also.  You get 3 controller plugs per remote system.  From what I can see each system is exactly the same, at least the 2 I now own are.

I purchases 3 Remote Control Outlets made by Utilitech at Lowes. I got them all with the same frequency, meaning the same remote button works all outlets. They really are awesome to use.

I glued two remotes in place at strategic places on my layout where I may need to cut power instantly. The other remote I keep in my pocket while running trains.

It is so nice to just press one on switch and power everything up at once. I have used it in emergency situations a few times and avoided wrecks.

I would highly recommend the wireless remote outlets no matter what size layout you have. Also great if you don't want little ones powering up your layout by mistake...just hide the remote?

I had a coupon at Lowes but I believe the everyday price is about $16.00.

Dave,

What is the amp rating for the Stanley unit? I'm looking at this one on Amazon for $30.

It has 5 outlets and 2 remotes, the remotes are programmable vs. the outlets and each outlet handles 10 amps at 120 VAC.

My concern is tha my layout just about consumes a 15 amp line. With this product, I should be able to use two or 3 outlets for the layout and program a remote to have them all turn on and off together.

I'm waiting to find out what battery the remotes use before pulling the trigger.

Barry,

There is no Amperage specs on these Stanley's that I can find, they do have a 960 Watt total capability for all three plug in units, so your 15 Amp usage should be fine.

The little batteries that energize each plug in unit are 3 Volt CR2032 Lith /433.92 Mhz freq.  I have had no problem using them with my layout so far, have not read the specs on the remote package you found, they look to be higher grade however and function at a higher level.

Gentlemen,

Doing a little more research on the Stanley indoor wirless remote system,

Bed Bath & Beyond also has them for 19.90, unfortunately I can find no tech support on this item, the Stanley Company as far as I can determine has no tech support on these wireless remotes, and other than the incomplete information that comes with the

remote system itself, there is nobody you can talk to about the Amperage qualifications of this item.

Barry I actually like the remotes you found better, even though they are more expensive they are a higher quality item and you get more plug in units & 2 remotes, put them in my favorites list for contact & ordering.  So far the Stanley's are working fine with my Christmas layout, I will use the remote package you found on the

bigger layouts.

Any issues with Legacy?  Does it carry the ground through the outlets with out any issues like some surge protectors?

Thanks in advance.

One button press and the layout powers up or down.

With a 10 amp allowance on each line, there's no chance of an overload.

Thanks for the thought process!

Marty,

Good question!

I would expect so, since all they are is a switch and, regardless, my Legacy Base has always been plugged into a (quality) surge protector.

I've got some friends visiting the layout this afternoon. I'll find out then!
