Good morning, and welcome to STEAMday Sunday once again.  This is the place to post photos and videos of steam locomotives of all different kinds and to tell us about them. Please remember to post only those photos and videos that you have taken or that you have received the written permission of the owner to post, and to comply with the Forum Terms of Service in all respects.

I will start us off with a video showing my MTH PS3 Long Island B6 steam switcher rolling by Yankee Stadium hauling beer reefers and a caboose:

Love all that steam.

Now, let's see the steam engines you would like to show us today.

Arnold

Lionel delivered its Lionchief Plus 2.0 model of Brooklyn Eastern District Terminal 0-6-0T steam switcher #15 (2032020) in 2020. It’s the smallest O gauge steam engine model in my collection. Lionel lists its length as 8.5 inches. The engine is so small that it’s dwarfed in comparison to scenery and structures on the layout, and even boxcars.

Model Railroader Cyclopedia – Volume 1 – Steam Locomotives, by Linn H. Westcott, has a drawing on page 32 of a 1910 Alco 0-6-0T industrial steam switcher that appears to be the prototype for Lionel’s model. It shows a length of about 32 feet (8 inches in 1:48 O scale) over coupler faces with 44-inch driving-wheel diameter.

Hello steam fans!  Arnold has maximum steam pressure up; the safety valve is popping, so let’s get rolling!

I prepared a video for another post earlier this week that I’d like to share again, supplemented by photos from the archives.  My MTH Premier B&M P3 Pacific no. 3702 is easily on of my favorite steamers.  It runs smoothly, has great detail, sounds great and smokes profusely.  A bonus, in my opinion, is one of the best paint schemes of any steam locomotive.

No. 3702 is hauling my MTH Railking seven car Madison passenger set.  The cars are slightly undersized compared to the locomotive , but I still think it makes for a fine looking train.

Well not disputing MELGAR but here is a Lionel switcher that might just be a little bit smaller than that tank switcher.  Its the 0-4-0 "Pioneer Dockside"  switcher from 1973-1976.  If there is a prototype for this I am unaware of it, so its just a figment of Lionel's imagination.  Complete with a "wood burning" stack for goodness sake!

Don,

Here's a comparison photo of my New York Central A-5 0-4-0 steam switcher #901 and BEDT 0-6-0T #15. I believe the 0-4-0 is scale-sized (MTH Premier) but will check and post later. The tank engines seem to be the smallest ones. It would be interesting to compare your Lionel 0-4-0T to BEDT #15. What are its length and height to cab roof or domes? It appears that BEDT #15 has a longer cab than Lionel's 0-4-0T.

Thanks Arnold for notching out the throttle and getting us going today!

This photo is though the eyes of how I imagine an ordinary person in the late 1940's would have noticed ( not noticed ) a steam locomotive doing it's thing.   By that time the iconic steam locomotive was well woven into the visual fabric of everyday life.  Here a Western Maryland 2-8-0 Consolidation is seen on a switching assignment in an industrial section of town.

In yet,  through another lens in which to interpret  this  photo:  The engine is in the background and headed away ...  representing it moving into the past.   The truck, however,  is headed forward, coming at you .. representing future ... as the trucking industry will soon present great competition to the railroad industry.

@MELGAR  Good (but rainy) afternoon,

Fun photo.  I have seen some pretty small tank engines so #15 could be scale.

The MTH A5 is scale.  Sunset's and Weaver's A5s are also scale, but the K-Line/Lionel version is a bit large.  Here is a comparison of the MTH and K-Line models.  The MTH is on right/in front.

Hello Steamday Sunday fans!  Here is a compilation video I made of the steam whistles from my collection. Steam whistles of our O gauge hobby can be as diverse as the locomotives they model.  Some are brash, some are intimidating, some are majestic and some are haunting, but all are nostalgic in their own way.
Have a great week everyone!

@MELGAR - Now I am curious...I will get those measurements tomorrow and post them on this thread.  I will have to do a bit of unpacking as I have been sorting my collection but it should be easy.  Thanks for your comment and interest.

@rjsmithindy - OK nice group of whistles.  But I have my Marx 701 whistle from the pre-war period and it works all the time.  All you have to do is blow in one end and the whistle noise comes out the top.  The only limitation is your talent!  (only kidding of course...neat whistles thanks for posting).

Best wishes

Don

@CAPPilot,

Ron,

The MTH New York Central A-5 is scale and so is BEDT #15. I don't find evidence that NYC ever had an 0-4-0 that looked exactly like this one. I think the MTH model (20-3261-1, 2007) is just a PRR A-5 with the Belpaire boiler replaced with a conventional one.
