I just purchased a new engine on ebay that will be my first Premier PS2 loco when it comes in (Previously have only had PS3 RK/Premier, and TMCC), as I understand this is '05 model with a 3V board and not the troublesome 5V (so no need hopefully to worry about it for a while), besides the usual oil / greasing that will undoubtedly be needed (also need to change traction tires as they were shown to be drying out/splitting), should I not think twice about picking up a BCR before I even begin to run it, and would there be anything else I should be looking into checking as well?

Wouldn't hurt to see if the battery is good.  If you have the full DCS system, you can do a battery check.

But I had a 6 year old battery leak, so I replace all my batteries with BCRs.

You said you understand it is a 3V board, but some in 2005 still had the 5V board.  If you know the MTH PN, you can find the manual on the MTH site and make sure.
